Playing in Sisters Country lakes

There's no better way to beat the summer heat – and create some wonderful family memories – than by visiting one of the many lakes that dot the Sisters Country.

There's good fishing for brook trout and wild rainbow trout at Three Creek Lake. No motorized boats are allowed, but there's a boat ramp to get your canoe or row boat into the water. You can rent non-motorized craft.

The kids will also enjoy tadpole hunting. The lake is just below Tam McArthur Rim and there are many trails in the area, so you can enjoy some excellent hiking in spectacular terrain.

Take Elm Street south out of Sisters (turns into Forest Road 16; paved) and follow it 17 miles up to the lakes. For information contact the Sisters Ranger Station at 541-549-7700.

Just 16 miles west of Sisters lies Suttle Lake.

This is a popular destination for all kinds of recreational activities. There are numerous campsites along the lake and the northeast end of the lake is home to The Lodge at Suttle Lake, where you'll find dining, cabin rentals and equipment rentals.

The three-mile hike along the lake is popular among locals and residents alike. Sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and fishing are all popular activities, and motorized traffic is allowed at the western end of the lake.

The marina at The Lodge at Suttle Lake rents a single-person Hobie sailboat, kayaks, trolling boats, canoes and peddle boats. The Lodge is also adding paddle board rentals and mountain bike rentals.

Cinder Beach, near the Lodge, is a nice play area for kids. For information call 541-595-2628.

Scout Lake is a popular local swimming hole. There are campsites at the lake and fishing and hiking are also available. Exercise caution and common sense when swimming in local lakes. Do not exceed your abilities.
