Camp Sherman:
Fun for the family, good for the soul

Camp Sherman prides itself on its peaceful quiet. Yet there’s still plenty going on, with events that celebrate both the natural wonders of the Metolius Basin and the spirit of the Camp Sherman community.

Fly fishers will revel in the Metolius River Fly Fishing & Bamboo Rod Fair set for Saturday-Sunday, July 16-17. This fair has grown into a major Sisters Country event, drawing the finest fly-tyers, rod manufacturers and guides to the perfect fly fishing location — the Metolius River.

This is a great place to introduce youngsters or adult beginners to the art of fly fishing, with a group of expert instructors to initiate tyros into the mysteries of the proper cast.

The event delves deeply into the mystique of the bamboo fly rod — and provides a great time along the river.

Believing in the power of great times and great food, the Camp Sherman Store hosts a series of holiday barbecues that have become favorites of locals and visitors alike. The events feature delicious food in a down-home setting with the best local musicians. This year, there are barbecues on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend.

Call the Camp Sherman Store at 541-595-6711 or visit www.campshermanstore.com for details on both the fly fishing event and the holiday barbecues.

On June 11, Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery will host Kids’ Free Fish Day from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Kids 10 and younger can be introduced to the art of fishing at the hatchery holding pond, where there are dozens of big fish there for the catching. Educational displays teach kids about the importance of fish and habitat in keeping America’s rivers and lakes healthy.

Things slow down considerably during the winter, but Camp Sherman continues to have fun with a series of “Cabin Fever Potlucks” at the local Community Hall through the snowy cold months.
